CP SD40-2 : 5388-5398

In total, 16 CP SD40-2's were owned by Ontario Hydro. These units were #5779-5789 (built in 1978, DRF-30r), and #5860-5864 (also built in 1978, DRF-30r). These units were intended to haul unit coal trains between mines in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, to Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Of these 16 units, CP bought 5 of them on April 1, 1986 : these were CP #5787-5789, and #5863-5864. The remaining 11 were re-assigned as following : CP #5779-5783 became CN #5388-5392 (5/1996), CP #5784 became CN #5396 (3/1999); CP #5785 became CN #5393 (12/1996); CP #5786 became CN #5397 (3/1996); CP #5860 became CN #5398 (3/1999); and CP #5861-5862 became CN #5394-5395 (12/1996).

All units except CN #5391 were retired by CN on April 24, 2000. They were purchased by CP on October 17, 2000 and placed in service in November and December, 2000. They retained the ex-CN numbers #5388-5390 and #5392-5398.
